New Report Showcases Global Progress Against Terrorism

CalArts Professors Visit Uruguay
CalArts professors Leo Hobaica and Glenna Avila with U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Robin Mattweman. Hobaica and Avila visited Uruguay April 13-19 to experience the country's dynamic museums, schools, software incubators, and universities. CalArts (California Institute of the Arts) is located in Valencia, a suburb of Los Angeles, California. The institute specializes in interdiciplinary, contemporary art.

Ambassador Baxter Visits the Alianza Binational Center in Chuy

This is one of the Alianza's smallest English language teaching facilities in Uruguay. Chuy is located in the municipality of Rocha, Uruguay's easternmost region. The border between Brazil and Uruguay passes through the middle of the city along its main avenue. Ambassador Baxter and his wife Kathy were visiting Chuy as part of their trip to Rocha and Treinta y Tres, April 22-23.

Ambassador Baxter Visits Artigas and Rivera in Northern Uruguay
Artigas is the northernmost municipality in Uruguay. The name Artigas comes from that of the national hero, Jose Gervasio Artigas. Its capital city, also named Artigas, is the furthest city from Uruguay's capital Montevideo, approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) away. It has a population of nearly 42,000.
The municipality of Rivera is located in northern Uruguay on the border with Brazil. Its capital city, also named Rivera, is a border community that forms an international city of 200.000 inhabitants together with Livramento (Brazil.)

Ambassador Baxter Congratulates the 2008 Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program
U.S. Ambassador Frank Baxter welcomed 46 Uruguayan public school teachers and members of the Montevideo business community to his residence April 17 to congratulate them for their participation in the 2008 Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program.The annual program, supported by the U.S.-based Fulbright Foundation and administered by the Fulbright Commission of Uruguay, sends Uruguayan teachers to the United States to spend three weeks teaching in American schools. Following a three-day orientation with the Fulbright Foundation in Washington D.C. in February 2008, the 46 Uruguayan teachers traveled to various states in the U.S. where they were installed in public and private schools as temporary teachers. In these roles, they learned about the U.S. education system and shared their Uruguayan teaching expertise with their host schools and families. They collaborated on ideas for curriculum development with their American counterparts, focusing on teaching the English language in their classrooms upon return to Uruguay.
NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown Visits Montevideo

The Ron Brown is a state-of-the-art oceanographic and atmospheric research platform that travels worldwide supporting scientific studies to increase our understanding of the world's oceans and climate. The students, along with their science teachers, had the opportunity of exploring the ship and learning about the equipment aboard. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a federal agency focused on the condition of the oceans and the atmosphere.

Alliance for a Drug-Free Uruguay Unveils New Ad Campaign

The Alliance for a Drug-Free Uruguay (Alianza por un Uruguay sin Drogas) launched a new drug prevention ad campaign during a presentation held at the ORT University in Montevideo. The adds, prepared free of charge by Uruguayan PR experts, will target child drug abuse by encouraging parents to communicate with their children and talk about drugs. The campaign includes a parents' guide with tips on how to raise awareness in children of all ages including teenagers.
Several Uruguayan media outlets such as dailies, radio and TV, have donated space and air time to run the ads. The parent's guide, available online, will be distributed throughout the country in supermarkets, movie theatres and sporting events. As part of the celebration of World Health Day 2008 and the 60th anniversary of the World Health Organization, the Government of Uruguay held a ceremony to honor the six Uruguayan scientists who share the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S. vice-president Al Gore and other members of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Uruguayan Scientists Share Nobel Prize for Research on Climate Change
The honorees, Agricultural Engineers Cecilia Ramos Mañé and Walter Oyhantçabal, Chemical Engineer Virginia Sena, Dr. Daniel Martino, Dr. Walter Baethgen, and Dr. Gustavo Nagy, received a special award from Uruguayan Minister for Public Health, María Julia Muñoz and Environment Minister Carlos Colacce, on behalf of the Uruguayan Government, for their work on climate change. Muñoz outlined the vast experience and international recognition of each of the winners. For their part, the Uruguayan scientists were grateful for the distinction and thanked the authorities for taking concrete and practical steps to ensure that Uruguay will be better prepared to deal with the impacts that climate change will bring in the future. With proactive attitudes, policies, information, training and changing "the minds of the people," it is possible to adapt to this challenge, assured the scientists.
