ART IN THE EMBASSY

ESPAŅOL

June - July, 2005

GUSTAVO ARROYO

The Art in the Embassy Program offers Embassy staff and visitors the possibility to enjoy original art by Uruguayan plastic artists through monthly exhibitions held in the lobby of the Embassy.

Gustavo Arroyo was born in Montevideo. He graduated as a medical doctor in 1974, and in 1988 he studied drawing and painting at the Professor Egardo Ribeiro and Walter Nadal art studios, under the notions of the Professor Joaquin Torres Garcia School. He has traveled regularly to the United States and Europe.

Professor Nadal once said, "Arroyo is a spontaneous painter, he allows the paintbrush to travel and capture the impulses of his intellect in a clear expressionist work. His analytical and methodical professional nature reflect his choice of subject matter, the start of the work, later, he releases himself in the completion of his painting allowing his inner self to show through. This all transforms into a painting of simple shading, strong and vigorous, where he achieves complete artistic harmony, in shades of intermingled colors, which fashion the tonal unity which characterizes his works. He chooses authentically Montevidean themes for the development of his paintings, like the candombe or the tango. The characters he represents play the leading role in the scene and emerge from the stillness of the frame to acquire the movement and necessary atmosphere that the subject matter requires, all accomplished with absolute simplicity".

The Cultural Affairs Office is responsible for organizing and implementing the Art in the Embassy Program.
